Abstract

1298031 Producing metal powder REPUBLIC STEEL CORP 1 June 1970 [18 June 1969] 26408/70 Heading C7X Metal powder is produced by directing a flowing stream of molten metal through a zone upstream of an atomizing zone 16a and into said atomizing zone 16a, there atomizing the molten metal (e.g. using gas nozzles 20) to form oxide-free particles, agglomerating and cooling said particles by injecting solid particles of the same metal into at least one of said zones and/or by injecting a flow of an inert gas substantially transverse or reverse to the flow of atomized metal particles downstream from said atomizing zone, and collecting the resulting particles. Recycled fines from the process may be injected into the molten particle stream from hoppers 38 by the aid of impellers 40, and/or N 2 gas may be injected via valve 36 and nozzles 22 as shown. In other embodiments, all of which use inert gas atomization (1) inert gas and metal fines entrained therein are injected transverse to the metal flow after atomization Fig. 5 (not shown), (2) metal fines are injected before atomization Fig. 6, (not shown), (3) fines are injected both before and after atomization Fig. 7, (not shown) and (4) N 2 gas is blown countercurrently to the atomized metal Fig. 8, (not shown).
