Abstract

1298013 Valves BEHR-THOMSON DEHNSTOFFREGLER GmbH 2 Feb 1970 [1 Feb 1969] 4839/70 Heading F2V [Also in Division F4] A thermostatically operated valve which is suitable for incorporation in an internal-combustion engine cooling system, (Fig. 1, not shown), comprises a casing 13 having three ports 7, 9 and 11 which are connectible to a radiator cold water outlet (6), to a by-pass line (10) of the coolant circuit, and to the inlet (12) of the engine cooling jacket (2), respectively. Disposed within the casing is a thermostatic element 14 the piston 18 of which is anchored to a bridge 16 and the casing 20 of which is guided by arms 22, 23, the casing carrying a first closure member 21 which co-operates with a seat 15, and an extension 27 which has passages 28, 29 formed therein and which movably supports a second closure member 25, the second closure co-operating with a seat 26. In the cold state of the engine, the valve members 21 and 25 assume the positions shown wherein no flow takes place between the radiator and the cooling jacket, and the flow entering port 9 is directed around the thermostatic element by means of a conical flange 32 on the second closure member 25 and further, by way of passages 28 and 29. Upon the temperature rising, closure 21 becomes unseated and closure 25 approaches its seat until finally it engages seat 26. Thereafter, a further rise in the coolant temperature results in extension 27 moving into port 9 until the extension radial ports 29 are obturated by an inner flange 31 on the second closure member 25, (Fig. 3, not shown).
