Abstract

1297103 Sealing porous metal articles LOCTITE CORP 13 Jan 1970 [13 Jan 1969 24 Dec 1969] 1544/70 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions C3 and Dl] Porous rigid metal articles are sealed by impregnating the pores of the article with an anaerobic polymerizable sealant and treating the surface of the article with a curing agent for the sealant. The sealent, which preferably comprises an acrylate ester monomer, polymerizes in the absence of air or oxygen and thus polymerizes within the pores of the article; the curing agent, which generally is an agent that accelerates polymerization of the monomer, enables polymerization to take place at the surface where the sealant is in contact with air. In a preferred procedure the article is submerged in the sealant and then subjected to a vacuum, the vacuum is then released thereby forcing sealant into the pores of the article, and the surface of the article is then treated with a curing agent. The metal from which the article is formed may be copper, zinc aluminium and alloys thereof, e.g. brass, as well as iron, steel, silver, platinum, chromium and tin. In examples the sealant is applied to rectangular die-cast aluminium meter housings, sintered powdered iron cams, a stainless steel disc and sintered iron timing gears which are subsequently zinc plated.
