Abstract

1296942 Coated products KURARAY CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [27 Feb 1970 12 June 1970] 22055/71 Heading B2E A sheet material having a porous and fibrous base and a non-porous polymeric surface film is rendered moisture permeable by impregnating the porous base with, an aqueous medium and subjecting the impregnated material to electrical discharge to form perforations in the surface film. The porous base may be non-woven cloth, woven or knited fabric, or paper, any of which may be impregnated, or may consist of a porous polymer layer and a fibrous layer, especially a first layer of polymer-impregnated non-woven nylon cloth and a second layer of porous polymer produced by a coagulation technique. The non- porous film may be of polyurethane, polyamide, polyester, polyamino acid resin, polymethacrylate, PVC, polyvinyl acetate, polyisoprene or butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer and these polymers, especially polyurethane, may also be used in the porous base layer. The non-porous film is applied to the base by spraying or coating, as a pre-formed film, or by partial dissolution and drying or partial melting and cooling of the surface of the porous polymer layer if this is used. The aqueous medium used to impregnate the porous base may be water, optionally with a surfactant, or an aqueous electrolytic solution and is applied by immersion, spraying or padding. The electrical discharge is usually a rectangular wave form pulse spark discharge.
