Abstract

1296673 Photo-electric line follower BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 10 Nov 1969 [12 Nov 1968] 53629/68 Heading G1A [Also in Division G3] A line tracing apparatus includes a rotatable tracer head incorporating two offset photoelectric devices, which oscillate across a line being followed and produce displacement and orientation signals, wherein the amplitude of the displacement signal is used to slow down the movement of the tracer head. As shown, a line tracing head 2 is rotated by a steering motor 10 on a carriage 12 traversed on a beam 14 by a motor 16. The beam 14 is driven along rails 20 by a motor 28. The head 2 incorporates two photo-cells which are oscillated in unison across a line on a platen 30. The steering photo-cell controls the motor 10 and the displacement photo-cell which is mounted on the rotational axis of the head, controls the motors 16, 28 through a resolver 34. The displacement photo-cell is employed to slow-down the speed of travel of the tracer head at sharp bends by reducing the voltages applied to the resolver windings as a function of the photocell output voltage or to a pre-set value at a threshold value of the output voltage.
