Abstract

1296434 Making fhermic lances FASSLER 4 Feb 1970 [21 Feb 1969] 5306/70 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions C7 D1 and F4] In a thermic lance for boring hard materials, (see Division F3-F4) a twisted wire cable 1 is surrounded by a fusible sheath 2 with a force fit (defined). The sheath 2 is gastight for oxygen to be passed along inside it to cause combustion of the end part of the previously heated cable and sheath. The sheath may be a tube into which the cable is forced or which is shrink-fitted around the cable or which is anchored to the cable by helical grooves (6), Fig. 5 (not shown), pressed into the sheath from outside. Alternatively, the sheath may be a sheet or strip of metal wrapped around the cable and having its longitudinal edges welded to form a tube. In another embodiment, the sheath is a metal tube formed around the cable by extrusion through a die.
