Abstract

1296398 Thermal storage heaters B J HARRIS 2 March 1970 ]6 March 1969] 12054/69 Heading F4V [Also in Division H5] A resistance heater element 12 for a skirting- board heater unit 11, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises a supporting sheet 17 of electrically insulating material, such as a cotton fabric or a fibre glass mat, and a number of latches of laterally spaced resistance wires 18 with conconductor bars 19 connecting adjacent batches of wires 18 in continuous alteration at opposite ends of the sheet 17 to provide a continuous multi-wire circuit extending in series between terminals 21 and conductor leads 22, 24, for the current supply, e.g. via connecting sockets 13 and plugs 14 between several such heater units 11. An overload thermostatic switch 23 may be provided. The bars 19 are of copper coil and alternate ones are insulted fron each other by an undulating strip 26 of melted fibre glass, the alternate bars 19 passing on opposite faces of the strip 26 and being attached thereto by stitching, (see also Fig. 5, not shown). The units 11 are moulded, by apparatus described in Figs. 6-8 (not shown), to have a shape appropriate for a skirting board. A convection heater unit 43 Fig. 10, may have recesses 43 and channels 44, 47, forming convection passages for the flow of heated air. The resistance wires 18 are of steel of resistivity 40 ohms/ft., and are attached to the sheet 17 by stitching, using a sewing machine with the wire in the shuttle and a plastic thread on the spool. Bars 19 may be attached to the sheet 17 by stitching or adhesive. The heating elements 12 may be used in the space heaters of Specification 1,296,397 i.e. moulded in refractory material containing a synthetic resin to form a storage heater.
