Abstract
1296263 Polymer compositions BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 26 March 1970 [29 March 1969] 14739/70 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C7 and D1] Impregnating or coating compositions comprise an aqueous solution of a polymer containing sulphonium and ammonium groups, in a molar ratio from 50 : 1 to 1 : 50, which becomes solvent resistant after heating. The groups may be in the monomers or introduced into a carboxyl containing polymer. In a typical example the following copolymer is formed (1) t-butyl acrylate/tris-#-hydroxyethyl sulphonium acrylate/N-n-butoxymethyl methacrylamide/2-ethylhexyl acrylate/acrylic acid which is reacted with N-dimethyl-#-hydroxyethylamine or diisopropanol amine in water. Other monomers exemplified are ethyl acrylate, styrene and dimethylethanolammonium acrylate. The polymers are formed in alcoholic solution. Coating compositions are formed by adding titanium dioxide and optionally hexamethoxymethyl melamine. They are applied to sheet metal by spraying or electrocoating and dried at 150-180‹ C. Cotton is made waterproof by impregnating with the aqueous solution of the copolymer followed by drying at 140‹ C.
