Abstract

1296099 Distillation apparatus; desalination of water PACTIDE CORP 29 June 1970 [3 July 1969] 678/72 Divided out of 1296098 Heading B1B In a distillation stage, such as a stage of a multiple-effect distillation apparatus of the type chimed in Specification 1296098, which distillation stage comprises a microporous vapour-permeable membrane 16 having one face formed with parallel ridges and depressions, and a pair of vapour-impermeable corrugated heat-conductive films 18 one on each side of the membrane, the membrane and films are arranged so that the corrugations of the films extend at right angles to the ridges and depressions of the membrane, and channels 20 are formed for distilland to flow between the ridged surface of the membrane and the adjacent film in the direction of the corrugations. The arrangement causes turbulent flow of the distilland; and for a distilland such as sea water the tendency to scaleaccumulation is reduced. The vapour evolved from the distilland diffuses through the membrane and condenses in the channel 22 on the other side giving up heat which passes through the adjacent film 18 to the distilland of the next effect. Membranes 16 may be made of polyvinylidene fluoride; and films 18 may be made of polycarbonate. (For Figures see next page)
