Abstract
1296041 Automatic voltage control JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 24 April 1970 [28 July 1969] 37711/69 Heading G3R A battery charging system for a road vehicle, of the type comprising an alternator 11 whose output supplies a battery 28 through a main rectifier and a conventional field control semiconductor voltage regulator 15----21, 24, 25 through an auxiliary rectifier, is provided with avalanche diodes 10, 12 which respectively constitute the auxiliary and main rectifiers and normally act as forward diodes, but which break down in the reverse direction to conduct transients which might otherwise damage the system components, particularly those of the voltage regulator. Operation of the circuit is described for various types of fault, e.g. battery disconnection or ignition, it being possible to replace the avalanche diodes 10 by normal diodes if protection against certain types of fault is not required.
