Abstract
1295966 Dental implant H BRAININ 19 March 1970 13196/70 Heading A5R A dental implant for insertion into an alveolus in the jaw of a vertebrate to form the root section of an artificial tooth comprises a member having at least one substantially cone-shaped projection and formed, at least in a part forming the surfaces for engagement with the jaw and/or the peridental membrane, from a carbon material which is isotropic, microcrystalline in structure, and substantially impermeable. The solid impermeable carbon part of the implant is formed by carbonising certain simple organic compounds, e.g. as described in the British Patent Specification No. 956452. Alternatively the implant could be formed by coating a root section of another material e.g. a ceramic material, with pyrolytic carbon by a similar method. To facilitate crowning of the implant a hole 7 is formed in the base of said cone-shaped projection. A gold peg 8 which is secured in a plastics cap 9 is so arranged that it fits into, and can be secured into the hole 7 in the dental implant. An implant assembly for a bicuspid tooth, Figure 6, has two conical cusps 11 joined by a portion 12, with a hole 17 in or near the portion 12.
