Abstract

1295590 Pipe joints G WALZ 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970 29 Jan 1971] 24489/71 Heading F2G In a pipe joint, a sleeve 4 on a pipe 3 surrounds a flange 2 having troughs and ridges around its periphery on another pipe 1 and an inturned lip portion of the sleeve compresses a first elastically compressible sealing ring 6 and a second elastically compressible sealing ring 7 to fill the annular spaces inside the sleeve. The sealing rings may be of electrically insulating material, such as rubber or a synthetic substitute, and may in addition or alternatively render the joint insulated against sound and vibrations. In the embodiment shown, the sleeve 4, which is initially generally cylindrical, is welded to the pipe 3 and the inturned lip is formed after the sealing rings have been inserted between the pipe flange and sleeve portions, the pipes being placed on a centering mandrel and axially compressed. The joint exhibits some degree of flexibility but relative rotation about the pipe axis is inhibited by protrusions 9 on the sleeve interior. In a further embodiment, particularly suited to small bore or thin-walled pipes, the sleeve 4 is formed integral with the pipe 3. In another arrangement, the protrusions 9 are omitted and an extension (12) (Fig. 2, not shown) of the pipe 3 having a tapered edge (13) further compresses and radially retains the sealing ring 6. The flanged pipe end 1 may be formed in a single operation, preferably by cold deformation.
