Abstract
1294922 Ethylene-norbornene compound copolymerization E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 15 Jan 1970 [15 Jan 1969] 2105/70 Heading C3P Ethylene is copolymerized with norbornene or a substituted derivative thereof in the presence of an organoaluminium halide and a vanadyl halide, ester or ester halide. The copolymers are characterized by having the norbornene (bicycloheptene) monomer randomly distributed throughout the copolymer molecules and all copolymer molecules have the same ethylene/norbornene ratio with a homogeneity index (defined as an empirical ratio related to melting point) of at least 75. The copolymerization is characterized by being conducted in solution at 40‹ to 105‹ C. with a ratio of moles of halide directly attached to Al and V to the moles of Al is at least 1À5, the Al/V ratio is at least 7/1 and the vanadium concenrration is less than 0À15 m.moles/litre of solution. In exemplified procedures, ethylene is copolymerized with norbornene, 5-methyl or 5-ethylidene norbornene-2 in the presence of Et 2 AlCl+Et 3 Al, Et 3 Al 2 Cl 3 (Et 2 AlCl+EtAlCl 2 ), or EtAlCl 2 and VO(O-n-C 10 H 21 ) 2 Cl, VO(O-n-C 4 H 9 ) 2 Cl, or VOCl 3 , together with N-propyl-trichloroacetamide or benzotrichloride as molecular weight modifiers in some cases.
