Abstract
1294383 Cathode materials THORN LIGHTING Ltd 19 April 1971 [11 Feb 1970] 6662/70 Heading H1D [Also in Division C7] A discharge lamp includes a thermionic cathode comprising a refractory metal stem 10, a refractory metal tubular member 11 secured to one end of the stem to form a cup 13 and an electron emitter composition including a refractory metal, a lanthanide metal or Th and a further metal which is at least partly soluble in the lanthanide metal or Th and whose alloy therewith is capable of wetting the refractory metal in the cup. The refractory metal is W, Ta or Mo. The further metal is Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Hf, Fe, Co, Ni, Zr, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt or another lanthanide metal. The composition may comprise 90% W, 9À5% Th and 0À5% Zr which is compressed and vacuum fired above 1200 C. The tubular member is of sheet or foil clamped to the stem of wire 15. The stem and tubular member are of W, Ta or Mo. A coating of powdered composition may be applied to the inside of the cup by coating the sheet before assembly. The cathode is used in h.p. Na and Hg lamps and reduces envelope blackening.
