Abstract

1294142 Variable speed gears FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 28 April 1970 [27 May 1969] 20233/70 Heading F2D A variable-speed epicyclic gear comprises an input member 20 (e.g. an internal combustion engine crank-shaft) connected selectively by clutches 62, 68, 70 (shown as an overrunning clutch) to sun gears 58, 66 of different pitch diameter coaxial with a sun gear 46 on an output shaft 48, the sun gears meshing with different gears 40, 42, 44 on gear clusters 30 rotatably mounted on a planet carrier 34 which can be braked, 36, 38, for under drive ratios, an overdrive ratio being obtainable by braking, 54, 56, another coaxial sun gear 52, smaller in pitch diameter than gears 58, 66, meshing with further gears 50 of the clusters 30, clutches 24 and 68 also being engaged.
