Abstract

1294010 Subaqueous structures; blasting UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 25 Sept 1970 [2 Oct 1969] 45707/70 Headings E1H and E1F A mound constituting an island 11 is formed by placing an explosive charge 14 in a borehole 16 at a mean depth DOB in ground 12 beneath water 13, plugging the borehole with e.g. concrete or rock 17, and detonating said charge. Due to loss of energy in the water fragments 18 produced by the explosion fill the crater 19 rather than being ejected therefrom. The ground 12 must be such that the proportionate increase in volume, or "bulking factor", BF due to the explosion is 0.4 to 0.65. The charge 14 may be of thermo-nuclear type. A jetty or sea-wall can be produced by forming a series of mounds in this manner. The relationship between the explosive yield of the charge, the height of the mound h, the depth of the water D, said proportionate increase BF, and said mean depth DOB are given in the specification.
