Abstract

1294084 Gas storage installations GAS COUNCIL 12 Nov 1969 [16 Aug 1968] 39360/68 Heading F4P In a liquefied gas storage installation a heat storage liquid is used to both partly liquefy incoming gas and evaporate liquid gas leaving the store. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the installation comprises a heat exchanger 25 and storage tanks 22 and 24 for the liquefied natural gas 21 and the storage liquid 23, respectively. Natural gas from a main 26 is passed through a purifier 33 and line 32 to the exchanger 25 wherein it is partially liquefied by counter current heat exchange with the storage liquid 23, it is then expanded in line 27 and passed to store. A pump 37 passes the liquid 23 from the bottom of tank 24 through the exchanger, and the relatively hot liquid returned to the top of tank 24 via line 36. The liquid gas leaves tank 22 via line 28, and is pumped through the heat exchanger wherein it is partly vaporized by a counter current flow of the now relatively hot liquid 23. The gas is then passed via line 30 to a heater 31 to raise the temperature to ambient before passing to the mains, and the cooled storage liquid is returned to tank 24. Vapour from tank 22 is also passed through the exchanger and the cold energy transferred to the storage liquid. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, two storage tanks are provided for the heat storage liquid. Liquid from the first tank 41 is used to cool the incoming gas, the resulting heated liquid being passed to the second tank 42 to be used to revaporize the leaving liquid gas. The cold liquid resulting from this latter exchange being passed back into the first tank. The first tank may be situated in the liquefied gas storage tank (Fig. 3, not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) another heat exchanger is situated in the circuit to aid the revaporization.
