Abstract

1293639 Laminated products DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 19 April 1971 [18 March 1970] 12982/70 Heading B5N A composite article comprises a carbon fibre reinforced resin matrix, especially an epoxy resin matrix, having an insert of metal wires bonded within the article at a region where a pin joint is to be made. The insert may be an array of parallel metal wires carried on glass cloth which may be resin-impregnated or may be a steel wire gauze which may be in the form of an expanded sheet of perforated metal. When the insert is metal gauze, the article is made by sandwiching the gauze between two layers of carbon fibre reinforced partially cured resin, applying pressure and heat to cause the resin to flow throughout the body of the gauze and cooling the article whilst pressure is maintained. Further heat may then be applied to effect final resin cure.
