Abstract

1292841 Starting; engine stop gear; indicating devices CHANTIERS NAVALS DE LA CIOTAT and M E ZUCCA 9 Sept 1969 44567/69 Headings F1B and F1K The invention relates to a pneumatic remote control device for a reversible variable-speed internal-combustion engine. The engine is provided with control members operable by actuators for respectively controlling its running direction and its speed of rotation, the engine being further provided with a pneumatic reversible starting device and with a plurality of sensors selectively responsive to parameters of its operation among which is a pneumatic tachometer measuring its actual speed. The remote control device comprises a central pneumatic logic system for operatively transmitting to the actuators a running direction order and a speed order issued from a selected one of a plurality of associated remote control stations, the central logic system controlling in an automatic sequential manner, in response to the orders and to information supplied by the sensors, the preparation of the engine and of the starting device for operation in the direction prescribed by the running direction order, the energization of the starting device and the monitoring of the speed of the engine according to the speed order. The headway or sternway orders issued either from the bridge Pa or from a cubicle Ca are respectively transmitted by the relay 1 to the relays 2 and 3 and by the relay 4 to the relays 5 and 6. The relays 2 and 5 control through the medium of distributers and associated actuators the displacement of the cam-shaft of the engine to forward running or to reverse running. The engine speed is measured by a tachometric device by which a pressure substantially proportional to engine speed is applied to the manometric control elements of the distributors L and M provided with respective return springs so adjusted as to enable the switching or changing over thereof only when the engine has reached the minimum idling speed and the ignition speed respectively. The switching or changing over of the distributor L effects feeding of the storage 11 which is then set by the switching off of the distributer M. The output from the storage 11 flowing through the relay 10 brings the relay 9 back to rest thus discontinuing the feed of the multi-vibrator 13, 14 and cutting off the admission of starting air. The starting air is not admitted again if the engine speed is kept above idling speed, that is when it has effectively been started. The release of the storage 28 may be caused either by remote control of the emergency stop distributer URG or by energizing of the electromagnetic valve L ub after a failure of the lubricating system of the engine. The storage 28 is set or reset through manual operation of the distributer Q. Its output signal flows through the relay 29 normally at rest and then through the relay 43 provided the latter has been previously energized by the storage 11 set as soon as the engine has reached its ignition speed or as soon as the micro-valve M' has been operated. Thus fuel is admitted only when the ignition speed is reached. The distributers Z 1 , Z 2 keep the relay 45 energized when the engine speed measured by the tachometric device is within a critical range. If this actuation lasts the time-lag relay 46 trips and actuates a warning device through the medium of the associated pressure contact V c .
