Abstract

1292770 Tape Measure STANLEY WORKS 30 June 1971 30575/71 Heading G1M A tape measure includes two casing halves 2 and 4, and a removable spool assembly 8, the hub of the spool assembly having recesses 32 engaging projections 26 on the casing to prevent rotation of the hub. The spool assembly includes a pair of side discs 34, each having a pair of arms 38 extending across the spool and snapping into recesses 40 on the other side disc. The measuring blade 10 is coiled around the arms 38, and a recoil spring 12 is housed inside the arms and connected to a slit 30 in the hub 28 at one end and to the blade 10 at the other. After the recoil spring has been wound up to the correct tension at the factory, a keeper 52 is applied which has a projection 54 engaging the hub recess 32, projections 56 engaging recesses in side disc 34, and resilient arms 57 which engage the blade 10. The keeper prevents relative movement of the hub, spool and blade to maintain the correct factory set tension in the spring, and is removed after the spool assembly has been engaged with a casing half 2,4.
