Abstract
1292372 Photoconductive composition EASTMAN KODAK CO 26 Feb 1970 [4 March 1969] 9257/70 Heading H1K An organic photoconductive composition comprises a binder and at least one methine dye in which a major proportion of the dye is in the J-aggregate state. The methine dye is preferably a cyanine, merocyanine or styryl dye and numerous examples are given. The composition is coated on a conductive support to yield an electrophotographic plate. Many suitable binders for the composition are specified. The dye may be formed into the J-aggregate state by treating the dye with hydrogen chloride fumes to give a colourless protonated dye, mixing the protonated dye into the composition and treating with ammonia fumes. If the composition is basic then this will neutralize the protonated dye. J-aggregates can also be formed by forming a layer of the composition and treating the layer with the fumes of methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, benzene or toluene. A further method of forming the aggregates is to mix an anionic dye with a cationic polymer or vice versa, or to form adjacent layers of charged dye and charged polymer. The presence of water assists J-aggregate formation for example by coating the composition on a cold substrate with simultaneous moisture condensation on the substrate. Ultrasonic mixing of an alcoholic solution of a dye into the composition will give a J-aggregate state. More than one aggregating dye may be used.
