Abstract
1292214 Epoxy resin compositions CIBA GEIGY (UK) Ltd 14 Dec 1970 [14 Jan 1970] 1913/70 Addition to 1044715 Heading C3B A curable composition comprises: (I) an epoxy resin and (II) a polythiol which contains at least two -SH groups per molecule and which is an ester of a mercaptomono-carboxylic acid with an organic compound having a repeating unit (CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 O) and at least two -OH groups per molecule. The total number of epoxy groups contained in each molecule of I and the number of -SH groups in each molecule of II is >4. A preferred II has the formula in which n is at least 1 and R is a divalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical containing no -SH group or free carboxyl group. R may be -CH 2 -, -CH 2 CH 2 - or -CH(CH 3 )-. II may be an ester of polytetrahydrofuran having a M.W. of 350 to 6000. I may be a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol or of a phenol Novolac resin. A catalyst for the reaction of mercaptan groups and epoxy groups, e.g. a tertiary amine, may be present. Conventional epoxy resin curing agents may also be present.
