[Also in Division F4] A float tank for use in the treatment of glass 31 on a bath of molten material 30, usually tin or silver, is formed either completely or partially of refractory blocks having coatings of a different refractory substance on their inwardly facing surfaces. As shown, the blocks 24, 25 are made of refractory ceramic material coated on their inwardly facing surfaces 28, 29 with a layer 26, 27 containing at least 50% carbon in the form of grains enclosed in a tarry binding agent. The coating can also be of silicon carbide, boron nitride or tungsten and can also cover the sides and base of the blocks. The coating also prevents sticking of the glass to the walls of the tank.
