Abstract

1291167 Cutting webs FMC CORP 15 Dec 1970 [22 Jan 1970] 59457/70 Heading B4B [Also in Division B8] A rotary cutter head C, e.g. for use in a continuous wrapping machine (10), Figs. 1-2 (not shown), comprises a driven shaft 24 for extending across a web (18) of material to be severed, a knife blade 39 carried by the shaft 24 and mounted' for movement through an active position in which its cutting edge is projected through the path 21 of the web (18), means 64 for storing energy to provide an impulse for actuating the knife 39 and triggering means 60 for selectively releasing the stored energy to drive the knife 39 through the web (18). The blade 39 lies within a slot 35 of one of a pair of crimping jaws 28, 30 for enclosing articles (A), Fig. 2 (not shown), in portions of a continuous tubular web (18), pivotable links 48, 50 and knife holder arms 40 forming a parellogram linkage for advancing the blade 39 from the slot 35 so that teeth formed on its cutting edge co-operate with a clearance slot of the lower jaw 30. As the shaft 24 and a corresponding shaft 26 of the lower jaw 30 rotate, a cam follower arm 72 having a guide shaft 74 connected by links 86 to the holder arms 40 follows a face cam 62 adjustably bolted to a frame block 40. In the upper part of its rotational cycle, the arm 72 is moved outwardly of the block 40, compressing the energy-storing springs 64 and acting on the parallelogram linkage to withdraw the blade 39 into its slot 35. As it approaches the lowest point in the cycle, the arm 72 passes over a step (70), Fig. 7 (not shown), in the cam track 62, the springs 64 acting to trigger the knife blade 39 by outward movement of the shaft 74, which acts through the linkage to urge the blade 39 into the slot 35, effecting a sawing action on the web (18).
