Abstract

1290613 Conditioning tobacco HAUNIWERKE KORBER & CO KG 26 Jan 1970 [5 March 1969 25 April 1969] 3679/70 Heading A2C Tobacco ribs are prepared for rolling and cutting by having their moisture content increased in an apparatus comprising, in one embodiment, a perforated conveyor belt 17 on which the ribs are sprayed with steam and/or water from nozzles 18, 19, and a heated conditioning chamber 2 comprising a rotary conveyor drum 5 which promotes penetration of the moistening fluid into the rib material. The drum 5, supported on rollers 3, 4, 6 and rotated by an electric motor 7, has a helical formation 12 causing upward transference of the ribs from the conveyor 17 to a conveyor 24. The drum has a moisture drain 9 and a fumes outlet 26 and is surrounded by an insulated jacket 10 to which steam for heating is supplied by a pipe 8. In a modification, the rotary drum is arranged so that its delivery end is at a lower level than its inlet, and the helical formation is dispensed with. A further modification has the conditioning chamber 2 in the form of a non-rotary, partially steam jacketed drum housing a rotary screw conveyor. Steam may be admitted also to the interior of the drum. A pair of nozzles in advance of the conveyor treats the tobacco ribs with steam or gas and/or a heated saucing liquid composed of water with an additive such as glycerine, an aroma or taste-modifying substance or a moisture retaining agent. A tank is also provided so that ribs with a very low initial moisture content may be treated alternatively by immersion in a bath of heated saucing liquid.
