Abstract
1290568 Water-activated electric cells YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORP 2 Sept 1970 [2 Sept 1969 28 Jan 1970] 42031/70 Heading H1B A primary cell intended to be repeatedly activated and deactivated for a series of partial discharges, is activated by pouring in water 16 through holes 15, the quantity of water which may be received being sufficient to cause reaction of not more than half of the anode 12. Thus, more than one filling with water is required to exhaust the cell. The anode 12, into which the -ve terminal 18 extends, may consist of zinc or aluminium or alloys of these metals, e.g. aluminium and tin. The anode is enveloped by a permeable separator 13 consisting of, e.g., absorbent paper, cotton felt or webs of synthetic filaments, the pores of the separator being loaded with sodium chloride. The air-depolarized cathode 11 comprises a catalytically active material such as carbon particles, with or without a coating of platinum, in a matrix of hydrophobic resin forming a porous structure impermeable to liquid electrolyte. The holes 15 are provided in a lid 14.
