Abstract
1290404 Making chain links; forging dies; angular bending REX CHAINBELT Inc 13 May 1970 [26 May 1969] 23168/70 Headings B3A, B3E and B3H [Also in Division F2] A method of making a conveyer chain link 10 having a rectangular body 12, curled knuckles 14 and 20 and an indented margin 24 to interfit and receive the curled knuckles 20 of similar adjacent links comprises forming a blank 28 having tongues 30 and 32, Fig. 3, pressing the blank into a die to turn the knuckles downwardly to form precurled knuckle portions such that edge 16 is swaged to a rounded form 88 corresponding to, and laterally continuous with, the outside surface 87 of the precurled portions of the tongues 30, and finally bending the precurled knuckle portions to form the knuckles 14 and 20. Before the blank 28 is stamped, the flat sheet metal is knifed to form bevels 23 and 25. The blank 28 is pressed into a U-shaped die 38 with a punch 40, Fig. 6, to form the precurled portions 87 and 89 of the tongues 30 and 32, respectively. Simultaneously the leading edge 16 and the bottom of the trailing edge 22 are swaged to form the rounded surfaces 88 and bevels (90) respectively.
