Abstract
1290049 Aromatic carboxylic acids SUN OIL CO 1 Oct 1970 [1 Oct 1969] 46700/70 Heading C2C Aromatic carboxylic acids are prepared by contacting an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a cobaltic salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid on the corresponding aliphatic carboxylic acid as a solvent therefor, wherein the alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon is fed into the reaction system at a rate which maintains the catalyst in the cobaltic state and wherein the catalyst is present in the solvent in a molar concentration cf at least 0.050, at a temperature of from 80‹ to 200‹ C. and at a pressure of from 1 to 50 atmospheres. The catalyst is preferably a solution of cobaltic acetate in acetic acid. The process may be used to prepare terephthalic acid from p-xylene.
