Abstract

1289928 Treating exhaust gas AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT and REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT 21 June 1971 [16 July 1970] 28923/71 Heading F1B Catalytic exhaust gas treating device has two cleaners 11, 12 mounted in series, one containing an oxidizing catalyst and the other a reducing catalyst and a by-pass pipe 9 and a valve 24 for directing the gas through either the cleaners or the by-pass pipe, the device consisting of a single enclosure defining two chambers containing the cleaners, the by-pass pipe being between the chambers and there being means 15 and 10 for connecting the outlet of chamber 11 to the inlet of chamber 12. The enclosure is a box 1 which is divided by three partitions 4, 5 and 6 into two wide compartments 7 and 8 and two narrow compartments 9 and 10. The cleaners 11 and 12 are mounted at an angle on a plate 2 which closes the open side of the box 1. The cleaner 11 divides the compartment 7 into upper and lower wedgeshaped sub-compartments 7α and 7b respectively. Similarly the cleaner 12 divides compartment 8 into sub-compartments 8α and 8b. Exhaust gas enters by a pipe 13, passes through an aperture 14 into sub-compartment 7α, travels downwardly through the cleaner 11 and then passes by a pipe 15 into compartment 10 which leads it to the inlet 16 above cleaner 12. After passing through the second cleaner, the gas leaves by a port 17 and an exhaust pipe 23. If the temperature of the device exceeds a predetermined value, a thermostat moves the valve 24 so that it closes aperture 20 and opens aperture 22. The exhaust gases then pass directly along the compartment 9 to the exhaust pipe 23.
