Abstract

1289783 Polymerization PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 23 Jan 1970 [24 Jan 1969] 3397/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] Branched polymers and random or block copolymers of conjugated dienes and/or monovinyl aromatic compounds are prepared by contacting the monomer or monomer mixture with an organo-lithium polymerization initiator prepared by reacting in the presence of a liquid diluent, in the absence of conjugated diene or monovinyl aromatic compound and in a molar ratio of from 1 : 0À1 to 1 : 2 a compound RLi where R is aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or a combination thereof with a polyvinyl aromatic compound of formula where Y is vinyl, n is 2 or 3, and R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1-4 alkyl, the total of C atoms in the R<SP>1</SP> groups not exceeding 12. Polymerization is normally effected at 85-300‹ F. in the presence of a diluent using an initiator concentration of from 0À25-100 milliequivalents of Li per 100 g. of monomer charged. The unquenched polymerization mixture contains terminal lithium atoms and may be treated with such agents as CO 2 , epoxy compounds, a stannic polyhalide or a silicon polyhalide to yield polymers which are easily curable by reaction with a reagent such as a polyfunctional aziridinyl compound. The organolithium initiators may be used to polymerize conjugated dienes present in low concentration streams (e.g. 30-60% by weight) such as 1,3-butadiene in a hydrocarbon stream containing up to 2500 p.p.m. 1,2-butadiene, up to 1400 p.p.m. allene and up to 400 p.p.m. aldehydes. In the examples, polybutadiene is prepared using an initiator obtained by reacting sec.-butyllithium with m- or p-divinylbenzene. Numerous other monomers are specified which can be polymerized using the organolithium initiator.
