Abstract
1289394 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 10 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 58652/70 Heading B6F Type selection; letter spacing.-A serial printer comprises a print element 9 rotatable by means of a shaft 8 driven by a stepping motor 7 for character selection, and means whereby the rotation of the shaft 8 can be employed to advance the print element 9 and its carriage 1 along the print line. As shown, a rack 20 is mounted for pivotal motion about pins 22 between a position engaging a toothed lug 19 on the carriage 1 and an alternative position engaging a pinion 10 fixed to the shaft. Electromagnets 23 effect such pivoted motion against springs 24. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the pinion (10) meshes with a gear (34) mounted on an electromagnetically operated rocker arm (33) whereby the gear (34) can be engaged with or disengaged from a rack (32). The motor may be fixed to the machine frame (Fig. 3, not shown) and drive the print element shaft (8) through an endless belt (36). Carriage stops; carriage return; line spacing.- At the end of a line of print, a magnet 17 on the carriage closes reed contacts 24a to cause the motor 7 to be driven in the reverse direction, the rack 20 being engaged with the pinion 10 to permit carriage return. When the carriage reaches the beginning of the line, reed switch 25 is closed to disconnect the drive and reinstate the forward direction of drive of the motor 7, and the carriage 1 strikes a lever 26 which is coupled to a pawl 30 to effect a line spacing step of the platen 3.
