1289158 Converting coal HYDROCARBON RESEARCH Inc 12 Nov 1969 55442/69 Heading C5E [Also in Division C2] A process for converting coal or lignite to solid, liquid and gaseous products comprises forming a slurry of the coal &c. with an oil and passing the slurry through a first hydrogenation zone 20 in which a catalyst is maintained under ebullating bed conditions under such a temperature and pressure to produce a liquid and char. Phenol and cresoles are recovered from the liquid, of which some at least (64A and/or 64B, 76) is delivered to a second hydrogenation zone 56, optionally with the addition of crude petroleum at 100. Zones 20, 56 both use H 2 derived from effluent (char 66 and/or gas 44) from zone 20. Roughly equal weights of coal &c. and oil are used in the slurry, and zone 20 may be operated at a temperature in the range 750‹ to 950‹ F. and from 1000 to 4000 p.s.i.g. Zone 56 is preferably of ebullated bed type and the subsequent refining and fractionation stage 82 is preferably a hydrocracking stage. Cresol may be hydrodealkylated at 92, with H 2 from 52 or 70.
