Abstract
1289024 Styrene polymer granules with foamed surfaces FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 6 Aug 1970 [6 Aug 1969] 37980/70 Heading C3C A waisted granule (Fig. 6) comprises polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene with up to 30% by wt. of a comonomer, e.g. acrylonitrile, polybutadiene or an acrylate, and has a foamed outer surface, a non-foamed core and a bulk density of 9-200 g./1. The granule is made by partially impregnating a cylindrical rod of the above polymerwith a blowing agent in aqueous suspension at 70-125‹ C. at a pressure of 4-10 atm. gauge for 1-4 hours so that the core of the rod remains unimpregnated (Fig. 5), foaming and then drying the granule. The blowing agent may be fluorotrichloromethane or n-pentane.
