Abstract
1289056 Power wrenches or screwdrivers DESOUTTER BROS Ltd 22 Dec 1970 60815/70 Heading B3N A power operated wrench or screwdriver comprises a clutch 4 having members 23, 26 with interengaging ramped teeth 25a, 25b, member 23 also has closely spaced teeth 25 in engagement with teeth 37 on member 36, the teeth 37 are normally in engagement with teeth 21 on member 20 but are moved out of engagement therewith when teeth 25a, 25b are forced apart at a predetermined value. In operation keeper 6 is moved backward and screwdriver 8 engages a fastener, and upon further pressure rods 9 and 10 are moved rearwardly to open valve 11 (see the lower half of Fig. 1). Drive is from motor 2 via reduction gear 3 to hollow shaft 17; tubular member 18 is splined to shaft 17 and drives member 26 via balls engaging in spline 27. Member 26 drives member 23 which in turn drives member 20 via teeth 37 on member 36. Member 20 is drivingly connected to screwdriver 8. Rod 9 is connected to member 26 by pin 22b. At a predetermined torque members 26 and 23 are forced apart. Movement of the member 26 also causes member 36 to move therewith. Thus drive to the screwdriver 8 is interrupted. Rods 9, 10 are also moved to shut valve 13 whereby motor 11 is shut off. Valve 13 is held closed by back pressure. After the initial disengagement of teeth 25a, 25b they re-engage as the drive torque is no longer being applied. However teeth 37 cannot engage teeth 21 until the motor stops due to the close spacing of the teeth on members 20 and 36. The load on member 26 by spring 28 can be changed by adjustment of abutment ring 29 by a key having a bevel drive to engage with bevel gear 30. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), valve 13 is dispensed with and the members of the clutch are placed in a reverse order with member 20 being the driving member and member 26 being the driven member.
