Fields F 1 . . . F 12 are recorded alternately by heads 14, 15 each head being stepped on by two associated pulses, Fig. 4 (not shown), so that normal playback may be achieved by similar control of the pulse motors to give Fig. 5A. By doubling the number of pulses supplied to each motor, Fig. 5B and 5E, fields as shown in Fig. 5D and 5G are played back to give a composite output, Fig. 5H.
