Abstract

1288299 Fuel elements NUKEN NUKLEAR - CHEMIE UND - METALLURGIE GmbH 24 Dec 1969 [17 Jan 1969] 62765/69 Heading G6C Fuel compacts for high temperature fuel elements are made by moulding under high pressure in an elastic rubber mould a mixture of coated fuel particles and a moulding powder consisting of natural graphite and/or graphitized petroleum cake and a binder, preferably a phenol resin binder. The mould preferably is cast in vacuo from silicone rubber, and is cylindrival with a central cylindrical cavity for accommodating the moulding mix. It is introduced into a cavity of a steel press and pressed with top and bottom force. The dimensions of the mould and its cavity are matched to one another in such a way that compaction of the moulding mix is equal in intensity both in the axial and in the radial direction. This provides for completely non-destructive moulding of the coated particles under a force of more than 3 t./cm.<SP>2</SP> and at the same time imparts excellent low anisotropy to the graphite matrix of the moulding. The enable the mouldings to be machined after heat-treatment they are preferably enveloped in a fuel-free outer layer using a two-stage moulding process. It is also possible for the moulding pressure to be applied isostatically from outside the mould through a liquid. To coke the binder the mouldings are heated to around 800‹ C. in an inert gas stream and then vented in vacuo at around 1800‹ C. Any shape compact, not only cylindrical, may be produced by this method using a suitable rubber mould. The compact may be provided with graphite spacer members, cooling ducts or annular gaps directly during moulding.
