Abstract
1288076 Aircraft crash recorders M L AVIATION CO Ltd 24 July 1970 [12 May 1969] 24139/69 Heading B7G [Also in Division F4] Underwater ejection apparatus for a buoyant flight data recorder container 45, has a space normally closed by a cover 3, 8, for housing the container and within which is located a tubular assembly comprising a pressure sensor 14, 15, 17 which, at a predetermined pressure, allows a spring 33 to move a plunger 22, 25 axially along the assembly so that a puncturing member 12 punctures a source of high pressure gas 24 releasing the gas inside the assembly, this causing a telescopic ejection arrangement to eject the container together with the cover from the space. The pressure sensor comprises a cylinder 14 which is fixed to a casing 6, 7 defining the space, and a piston 15 which is moved by the pressure of water entering through holes 16 to compress spring 17. This movement releases plunger 22, 25 from a position locked to cylinder 14 so that the gas source 24 is punctured. The pressure of released gas forces the plunger to move against the pressure of spring 33 to a position where locking balls 21 are released, allowing a tube 10 to move. Tube 10 is then ejected by gas pressure from the casing, taking with it the recorder container 45 and the cover 3, 8. The container holds a lightweight recycling flight data recorder and a battery powered radio beacon 47 and flashing light 49. The apparatus is fitted in the tailplane of an aircraft within a fairing 1.
