1287552 Teeth cleaning devices SONOPTICS CORP 8 Jan 1970 [30 Jan 1969] 962/70 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions H2 H4 and B4] An ultrasonic vibratory cleaning device 10, particularly for cleaning teeth, comprises an electrically insulated casing 11 receiving removeable end caps 28, 43, base-end cap 28 resiliently supporting one end of a hollow cylindrical piezoelectric crystal transducer 16 and mounting a fluid coolant conduit 20, communicating through transducer 16 with a groove 56, a bore (56'), Fig. 2a (not shown) in a removeable work piece 31, and mounting electrical conductors for connecting transducer 16 to an oscillator, means being provided between a head end of transducer 16 and work piece 31 for transmitting transducer vibrations to the work piece without generating undesirable vibrations of the casing. The vibration transmitting means comprises a stainless steel insert 34 acting as an impedance transformer, receiving the inner end of work piece 31, and spacing the latter coaxially, by means of an O-ring 49, with respect to the casing 11. A stainless steel insert 17 couples conduit 20 to transducer 16 which has conductively plated areas 21, 22 connected via flexible leads 23, 24 respectively to pins 26, 27 the lower end of transducer 16, insert 17, connecting leads and conduit 20 being enveloped in a resilient potting compound 31'. A slide-on plug (50), Fig. 4 (not shown) connects conduit 20 with a coolant source and pins 26, 27 to an oscillator. The groove 56 or bore (56') provides an outlet for the coolant and directs a jet towards the tip 33 of the work piece. The transducer may be fabricated from lead zirconate and/or lead titanate, and its mode of vibration may be altered by changing the locations of plated areas 21, 22, and/or altering the oscillator frequency, to impart, for example, longitudinal radial or torsional vibrations to the work piece which may be made of stainless steel or beryllium copper.
