Abstract
1287235 Electric couplings ESSEX INTERNATIONAL Inc 4 May 1971 [4 May 1970] 12953/71 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] A connecting member, for use either as a switching device (see Division H1) or as means of making a permanent connection between conductors which need not be accurately aligned, comprises a unitary body having a first portion 1 formed of electrically non- conducting resilient material such as silicone rubber and one or more second parts 2 each formed of a similar material having a plurality of discrete, electrically conducting particles dispersed through it such that said second parts are conducting or may be rendered conducting by compressing them. The particles are of silver or gold or less expensive metals such as copper or iron coated with silver. In Fig. 4 such a body 5 is located between terminal pins 33, 35 in a two part coupling. The pins are carried by insulating members 28, 34 which are held together by a bayonet connection 40, 41 and a spring 43 which provides the force to render the parts 6 conductive if necessary. In Fig. 9 wire ends 48 are connected to a printed circuit board 45 by clamping a body 16 between them sufficiently tightly to render portions 12 conducting. Similarly connections can be made between two printed circuits (Fig. 11, not shown) or across a printed circuit (Fig. 13, not shown). In all cases the silicone rubber may have a greater coefficient of expansion than the particles whereby if the temperature is raised the particles are moved apart by the rubber. In this way the circuits are broken automatically if overheated or overloaded.
