Abstract
1286939 Methylene chloride SOLVAY & CIE 19 April 1971 [12 March 1970] 23903/71 Heading C2C Methylene chloride is prepared by the chlorination of methane at 200-500‹ C. in which the molar ratio of chlorine to methane is 0À4, the chlorination products are condensed, hydrogen chloride is absorbed from the uncondensed gas by washing with a liquid mixture of chlorinated methane obtained wholly or in part in the chlorination step, recycling the washed gas to the chlorination step, separating the wash liquid into hydrogen chloride and chlorinated methane, and treating at least part of the resulting liquid to separate methylene chloride from methyl chloride, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. The wash liquid may consist of all four chlorinated methanes, or may have been first treated to remove methyl chloride or methyl chloride and methylene chloride. Methyl chloride may be concurrently chlorinated, and the product therefrom combined with the methane chlorination product before washing. Methyl chloride separated from the wash liquid may then be recycled to the methyl chloride chlorination zone.
