Abstract

1286345 Perforated, spot-bonded plexifilament sheets E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 May 1970 [8 July 1969] 24263/70 Heading D1R A porous, non-woven film-fibril sheet of random-laid, substantially continuous linear polyethylene or other crystalline polyolefine plexifilaments (see Specification 891943) is spot bonded by passing the sheet between the nip of two rolls. One has a heat-conducting surface carrying 200-800 hard bosses per 1 in 2, and comprising 5-10% of said area, the other has a resilient surface. A temperature of 150-185‹C ensures that the bonds extend for the thickness of the sheet. Multiple passes may be made. The sheet is then perforated by one or more passes through a needling loom or rotary pin perforator. Said perforations have an average cross-sectional area of 10<SP>-4</SP> sq. in. to 10<SP>-5</SP> sq. in. and comprise 3% to 10% of the sheet area. The needles or pins are of circular or triangular cross-section, and are barbless, so that the perforations are mainly produced by separating the plexifilaments rather than by tearing them. The sheet is formed by spreading the extruded plexifilaments using a contoured rotating baffle, passing them through a corona charging zone and collecting them on a moving belt in overlapping intersecting layers. The sheet is consolidated by calendering.
