1285761 Water heaters A C GIBBONS 11 Feb 1970 [12 Feb 1969] 7482/69 Heading F4A [Also in Division H5] A heating unit for a domestic hot water cylinder (not shown) comprises a heat exchanger 4, with pipes 8, 9 for connection to the boiler, and an electric immersion heater 10, the unit being adapted to be passed through the standard tapped boss in the cylinder. A plurality of heater elements 10 of the metal sheathed type may be supported by the bend 1, along with a thermostat rod 11 controlling a switch 12. The cover 13 for bend 1 may also enclose an additional switch and solenoid operated valve (not shown) to render either the immersion heater 10 or heat exchanger 4 operative. Heat exchanger 4 comprises concentric tubes 5, 6 providing a closed annnular space 7 through which hot water from the boiler circulates via pipes 8, 9. If desired the bottom of the heat exchanger may be closed and the tubes 5, 6 extend up to the bend 1. Alternatively the heat exchanger is a closed loop with fins on its outer surface.
