Abstract

1285694 Automatic control of magnetic fields PERKIN-ELMER Ltd 25 Nov 1969 [10 Sept 1968] 42928/68 Heading G3R [Also in Division G1] A magnet system, for example that used in a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, is stabilized against short-term flux disturbances by the provision of a pick-up coil 4A, 4B, a main bucking-out winding 5A, 5B and an auxiliary bucking-out winding 6A, 6B arranged as shown in Fig.1, the signal generated by the coil 4A, 4B being applied to a high-gain amplifier 7 whose output is fed to the windings 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B in such a manner that the auxiliary winding receives a fraction of the energization supplied to the main winding to complement the stabilizing action thereof. This fraction is determined by the setting of a variable resistor 10 which may shunt the winding 6A, 6B if a series connection of the two windings replaces the parallel one shown. The spacing of the two windings is chosen so that the main winding provides a major part of the stabilization and the auxiliary winding retains its operational identity. Construction and arrangement of the windings is discussed together with the design values of the circuit components 7, 8, 9, 10. If the system is used in a N.M.R. spectrometer, the effectiveness of stabilization corresponding to the setting of the variable resistor 10 may be tested by introducing a deliberate magnetic disturbance around the system and measuring the shift in the position at which a given resonance line is observed.
