1284930 Furo- and thieno-pyridines UNION CARBIDE CORP 24 Nov 1969 [31 Dec 1968] 57352/69 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the Formula I: where R 1 is a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom or an alkyl C 1-6 , benzyl, trichloromethyl or dimethylaminomethyl radical, R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl C 1-12 or cyano radical and the moiety represents a 2- or 3-furyl or -thienyl radical or a 2- or 3-benzofuryl or -benzothienyl radical optionally substituted by halogen atoms or alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, benzyl, aryl, styryl, cycloalkyl, adamantyl, furyl, thienyl, morpholino, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkoxyalkyl, dialkoxyalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, benzyloxy, benzoyl, benzoyl vinyl, piperidinomethyl, cyano, alkylthio, benzylthio, arylthio, benzylthiomethyl, alkylthioalkyl, arylthiomethyl, haloalkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl, dialkylamino, alkylsulphonyl, arylsulphonyl, benzylsulphonyl, thienylalkyl, thienylthio; alkoxyphenylthio, phenylalkynyl, thienylalkynyl, alkoxyphenylsulphonyl, cyanostyryl, cycloalkenyl, alkylthienyl, trialkoxyalkyl, phenoxyvinyl, furoylvinyl, cyanovinyl, thienylvinyl or dioxanyl radicals, and wherein the substituents have up to 20 carbon atoms; the compound I may also consist of two condensed pyridone moieties as defined above connected by a divalent group consisting of a thio, dithio, oxydimethylene, alkylene, alkylenedithio or alkylidine radical not having more than 10 carbon atoms. They are prepared by heating at 200-300‹ C. a vinylisocyanate of the Formula II: where R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen, bromine or chlorine atom or alkyl C 1-6 , haloalkyl, benzyl or dimethylamino radical and R<SP>2</SP> is as defined above, until cyclization has occurred. # - (2 - Thiophene) vinyl isocyanate, # - (2- furan) vinyl isocyanate, # - (2 - benzofuran) vinyl isocyanate and #-(3-benzothiophene)-vinyl isocyanate are prepared from the corresponding azides. #-(2. or 3-Thiophene) acrylyl azide is prepared from the appropriate acid chloride and sodium azide. # - (3 - Benzothiophene) acrylic acid chloride is prepared from the corresponding acid and thionyl chloride. # (5 - Bromo - 2 - thiophene) acrylic acid is prepared from 5-bromothenaldehyde and malonic acid. 3 - Thenaldehyde and as by-product 2,3-thiophene dialdehyde are prepared from 3-bromothiophene and butyl lithium. α - Butyl - # - (2 - thiophene) acrylic acid is prepared from thenaldehyde and heptanone followed by oxidation.
