Abstract

1284677 Chromium electroplating M & T CHEMICALS Inc 22 May 1970 [26 May 1969] 24921/70 Heading C7B Iridescent chromium is electro-deposited from an aqueous bath containing (a) hexavalent chromium ions; (b) a (halo) alkyl sulphonic acid or (halo) alkyl phosphonic acid or salt thereof; and (c) an acid having the general formula wherein C is 1 to 3, and Z is a hydrogen atom or an organic group having 1-3 carbon atoms; or a salt or ester thereof. The chromium may be present as chromic acid; and in part as sodium chromate or dichromate, potassium chromate or dichromate, strontium chromate, magnesium dichromate or lanthanum chromate or dichromate. As catalysts the bath may include sulphate, fluoride or complex fluoride ions, e.g. as fluosilicate, fluoborate, fluoaluminate, fluotitanate or fluozirconate. As neutralizers or buffers phosphates, borates, sulphonates may be present. The (halo) alkyl acids of (2) above may be present as Na, K, Li, Cs, NH 4 , Ca, Sr or Mg salts or as esters. The surface to be coated may be of iron, steel, bronze, copper, zinc, aluminium, magnesium, nickel or brass; brass, steel or zinc plated with copper bronze or semi-bright nickel and thereafter plated with bright nickel, or plastics material, e.g. having a nickel coating. The iridescent coating may subsequently be coated with a further metal coating, e.g. of Ni, Cu or Cr, or of an organic or inorganic coating.
