Abstract
1284000 Shaft seals BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 21 Dec 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 60462/70 Heading F2B A self-adjusting labyrinth gland comprises annular sealing plates 4 interposed between annular retaining plates 5 and held resiliently and lightly in compression as by a spring ring 11 which produces a frictional force sufficient to hold them against their weight in any position to which they are radially displaced but insufficient to produce substantial wear of the plates as a result of their radial displacement by eccentricities of for example a rotary shaft 1. The spring ring 11 and the laminations 4, 5 are split for assembly into a groove 3. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the laminations are not split and are held in a recess by a cover plate, the laminations being axially compressed by the interposition of a spring (8). In a third embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the laminations are compressed within a recess by coil springs (9).
