Abstract
1283832 Mercaptans STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 21 April 1970 [19 May 1969] 18913/70 Heading C2C Mercaptans are prepared by reacting H 2 S with olefinic compounds in the presence of a free radical initiating compound and a trivalent organic phosphorus compound of formula where X, Y and Z are each O or S, a, b and c are each 0 or 1 and R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> are C 1-20 hydrocarbyl. The phosphorus compound may be formed in situ by reaction of phosphine with the olefine. Suitable free radical initiators include peroxy compounds and azo compounds. The olefinic compound may be substituted with halogen, CN, carboxy, carboxylic ester, carbonyl, tertiary amino, sulphoxide, sulphone, hydroxy, ether, thioether or amide groups.
