Abstract

1283195 Fuel elements BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd 17 April 1970 [17 April 1969] 19781/69 Heading G6C A fuel stringer comprises a column of fuel elements 3 slidably mounted on a tie bar 1, and a head unit 4 disposed above the fuel elements and having a connection with the tie bar such that, when the stringer is in position in a reactor fuel channel, the head unit 4 compressively loads the fuel elements 3 vertically against a support (20) (Fig. 2, not shown) at the bottom of the fuel channel (12) and tension in the tie bar 1 is released. The tie bar 1 extends upwardly from a carrier ring 2 which supports a column of annular fuel elements 3. The head unit 4 is slidably mounted on the tie bar 1 and comprises a sleeved neutron shield plug 5, a heat shield 6 and a standpipe shield plug 8, the latter having an enlarged head 13 which is slidably contained within a tube 14, which in turn is attached to a standpipe closure plug 15. The tie bar 1 extends into a space within the tube 14 and a compression spring 16 is connected between the upper end of the tie bar 1 and the head 13 of the shield plug 8. In operation, with the fuel stringer suspended via the standpipe closure plug 15 from a grab head 17 of a refuelling machine, the sliding joint 13, 14 is extended and the spring 16 loads the tie bar 1 in tension and thus presses the fuel elements 3 and the head unit 4 together. If, when the stringer is lowered into its fuel channel, an element snags on an obstruction in the channel, the entire weight of the stringer, less the coolant upthrust forces, will act against the snag. If, however, the snag is sustained, the weight change experienced by the grab head 17 will be detectable by a weightsensing device so that lowering of the stringer cam can be stopped. When the stringer is fully inserted into its fuel channel, the carrier ring 2 seats on the support (20) and the closure plug 15 continues to be lowered until it rests on the upper end of the tie bar 1. The plug 15 is then pressed down against the spring 16 (Fig. 2, not shown) and locked into the standpipe. This has the effect of releasing tension in the tie bar 1 and transferring the loading of the spring on to the head unit 4 and hence the fuel elements 3.
