Abstract

1282893 Sewing machines W J CLARKSON Ltd 7 July 1970 [9 July 1969] 34624/69 Addition to 1207834 Heading DIG In the apparatus for stitching around a shaped piece of material by means of a guide slot 30 in a work plate 1 according to Parent Specification the pin fixed to the machine frame and located in the guide slot 30 is replaced by a movable stylus finger 31 mounted in a spherical bearing 40 so that the stylus finger can be deflected in any direction from a vertical position to control the hydraulic rams which move the work plate 1 in two directions at right angles and within the plane of the work plate. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the mounting for the stylus is bolted to the machine frame with the stylus pointing upwards into the guide slot 30 and first and second valves 44, 45 are provided each of which controls a ram for moving the work plate along a respective one of its two directions the two valves having operating members 46, 57 perpendicular to one another which are operable by deflection of the stylus finger from the vertical position if such deflection has a component of movement along the axis of the respective operating member. A spring loaded plunger 67 presses against the lower portion of the stylus so that it is deflected from the vertical position so that it is inclined in the slot 30. When the slot engages the stylus finger, due to a change in direction of the slot, to move it into a given vertical plane. This operates either valve 44 or 45 depending on the direction of movement and the fluid pressure supply is removed from the appropriate ram thus preventing any shock from being transmitted against the stylus finger. As soon as the stylus reaches the vertical position the appropriate microswitch will be closed. This causes operation of a hydraulic motor 70 and rotates a secondary housing 61, and spring plunger 67, until the stylus is again leaning forward and the microswitch is released thus allowing fluid flow to the other ram to provide a movement of the work plate in the new direction of the guide. A secondary guide slot is also provided, the arrangement being that the needle of the sewing machine passes through an axial hole in that follower.
