Abstract

1282739 Track apparatus BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 13 Oct 1970 [16 Oct 1969] 50845/69 Heading B7N [Also in Division G1] The "derailment potential" of railway vehicles is determined by simultaneously sensing the individual loading of each wheel of a pair having a common axis and comparing the ratio of the wheel loadings with a predetermined ratio. An alarm may be activated if the predetermined ratio is exceeded, and an axle counter may be used to identify the unevenly loaded axle. The sensing means may be strain gauge bridge circuits on the track webs or strain gauge load cells under a sleeper. The track leading up to them should be adjusted for line, cross-level and top, for about seven chains. Each sensing means preferably produces two identical output signals, one of which is recorded (Fig. 2, not shown) and the other of which goes to the ratio determining means. An alarm may be operated if the signals fail to reach a predetermined level. The apparatus is calibrated by passing a train of varying axle loads over the test site. A mathematical analysis is given.
